On this page, we explain how to easily play Subtlety Rogue in World of Warcraft Patch 12.0.5, using the simplest rotation, talent tree, stat priority, gear setup, etc., without sacrificing performance.

1.

The Basics for Subtlety Rogue in Midnight

This section is intended for players who are new to the game or class, have no intentions of raiding Mythic difficulty, or simply want a more straightforward way to play their specialization without being overwhelmed by the numerous priorities and active abilities that need to be taken into consideration for optimal play.

Subtlety, when you boil it down, can seem very simple. You build combo points and spend them to deal damage. However, to maximize your damage potential it can be a very involved process which requires knowledge and understanding of the basics.

This section aims to point players in a direction that allows them to play Subtlety by easing into the spec. This will not be the absolute best setup, but it will perform better for those who are getting up to speed with the intricacies of the specialization.

Although some talents might offer marginally higher gains when played perfectly, if played improperly they could cause the player do less damage. As such, the talents recommended here aim to present the best setup that has as little punishment as possible for unfamiliarity or mistakes.

2.3.

Single-Target Rotation

  1. Try to always begin while in Stealth Icon Stealth.
  2. Cast Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance when Secret Technique Icon Secret Technique is ready.
  3. Cast Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades during Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance.
  4. Cast Secret Technique Icon Secret Technique during Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance with 6 or more combo points.
  5. Cast Eviscerate Icon Eviscerate to spend combo points when you have 6 or more.
  6. Cast Shadowstrike Icon Shadowstrike whenever you can, otherwise use Backstab Icon Backstab to build combo points.

You want to use two of Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance during your Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades so do not cast it right before Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades comes off cooldown.

2.3.1.

Apex Talents

The last Apex Talent Ancient Arts Icon Ancient Arts will sometimes give you a buff, which you can see by a shadowy glow near the middle of the screen. When that happens, your next Combo Point Spender will deal additional damage and you will get your Combo Points refunded, allowing you to cast another spender right away. The other two Apex talents do not have any noticeable impact on the rotation.

2.4.

Multi-Target Rotation

  1. Try to always begin while in Stealth Icon Stealth.
  2. Cast Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance when Secret Technique Icon Secret Technique is ready.
  3. Cast Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades during Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance.
  4. Cast Secret Technique Icon Secret Technique during Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance with 6 or more combo points.
  5. Cast Black Powder Icon Black Powder to spend combo points when you have 6 or more.
  6. Cast Shuriken Storm Icon Shuriken Storm to build combo points.

You want to use two of Shadow Dance Icon Shadow Dance during your Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades so do not cast it right before Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades comes off cooldown.

You can macro Coup de Grace Icon Coup de Grace together with your Black Powder Icon Black Powder button and it will automatically cast it for you whenever it is ready, the macro looks like this:

Coup de Grace + Black Powder

2.4.1.

Apex Talent: Ancient Arts Icon Ancient Arts

The last Apex Talent Ancient Arts Icon Ancient Arts will sometimes give you a buff, which you can see by a shadowy glow near the middle of the screen, and when that happens your next Combo Point Spender will deal additional damage and you will get your Combo Points refunded, allowing you to cast another spender right away. The other 2 Apex talents do not have any noticeable impact on the rotation.

2.4.2.

Season 1 Tier Set

During Season 1 of Midnight you will have access to these following Tier Set Bonuses.

  • Rogue Subtlety 12.0 Class Set 2pc Icon Rogue Subtlety 12.0 Class Set 2pc
  • Rogue Subtlety 12.0 Class Set 4pc Icon Rogue Subtlety 12.0 Class Set 4pc

The 2-piece of the new Midnight Season 1 tier set passively makes your combo-point finishers do more damage and the 4-piece increases the duration of Shadow Blades Icon Shadow Blades by 4 seconds. It does not alter the priority listed above in any way but it does make our damage go up by quite a noticeable amount.

2.5.

Stat Priority for Subtlety Rogue

The general stat priority for a Subtlety Rogue is as follows. For more information on what's presented on this page, check out our main Stat Priority page.

  1. Haste (up to 700)
  2. Mastery
  3. Critical Strike
  4. Haste (after 700)
  5. Versatility

In AoE/Multi-Target scenarios, Critical Strike and Mastery gain some additional value, but the Haste "cap" of ~700 should still be prioritized.

2.6.

Combat Assistant and One-Button-Rotation

The Combat Assistant and the One-Button-Rotation are currently not very good for Subtlety Rogue. Using the One-Button-Rotation is around 10% less DPS than doing the rotation above in Single-Target situations and upwards of 15% in Multi-Target AoE situations.

Using The Combat Assistant does not incur the GCD penalty associated with the One-Button-Rotation, which makes the difference much less pronounced and not that bad to use.
