Shadow Priest Leveling Guide for Midnight

Shadow Priest offers a sort of unique take on leveling where you have a few options on how to play, depending on your preferred pacing. As a damage-over-time specialist, you can pull lots of mobs at once and let your DoT effects tick down on them, or you can pull a group of mobs and burst them down, depending on your talents.

When leveling as a Shadow Priest you want to prioritize tagging mobs with Shadow Word: Pain Icon Shadow Word: Pain and Tentacle Slam Icon Tentacle Slam, and let your DoTs do the rest. You can then use Fade Icon Fade and Psychic Scream Icon Psychic Scream to avoid being hit by mobs and Voidweaver can further extend this by casting Void Torrent Icon Void Torrent while moving.

In between combat be sure to use Recuperate Icon Recuperate to quickly restore health out of combat without needing to eat consumable food. This can be found in the General tab of your spellbook.

1.1.

Leveling Gear Options

When it comes to gearing out your Shadow Priest, you should always take the piece with a higher Intellect value, typically referenced by the item level of that piece. Intellect is far and away our better stat and will make everything you do hit harder and kill mobs quicker.

When you get pieces of gear that have the same Intellect, you should roughly prioritize pieces with Haste, Mastery, or ideally both to be slightly more optimal.

When using Heirloom items, we recommend using those with Haste as they will slightly improve the gameplay flow while leveling.

Useful Leveling Consumables for Midnight

Leveling in a new expansion is all about minimizing downtime and front loading power. While endgame enchants and consumables are often disabled or heavily scaled during early leveling, there are still several items worth stockpiling ahead of time to make the process smoother, faster, and less frustrating. The recommendations below focus on items that historically remain useful at expansion launch and provide value regardless of tuning changes.

The War Within enchants will still work throughout the leveling process, and can be a cheap way to add small boosts of power. Enchants that grant haste or speed are particularly valuable early on when gear upgrades are sparse. Prioritize the following:

  • Enchant Ring - Radiant Haste Icon Enchant Ring - Radiant Haste (helps as you lose haste while leveling)
  • Enchant Boots - Scout's March Icon Enchant Boots - Scout's March
  • Enchant Cloak - Chant of Burrowing Rapidity Icon Enchant Cloak - Chant of Burrowing Rapidity
  • Enchant Bracer - Chant of Armored Speed Icon Enchant Bracer - Chant of Armored Speed

Tempered Potions remain usable at lower levels can significantly speed up difficult pulls, elite quests, or story encounters. Stock a small supply for moments where burst damage or survivability matters. Be sure to use these before you get to max level content!

Having a small stack of Invigorating Healing Potions reduces reliance on cooldowns and self-healing, especially during early levels when defensive toolkits are incomplete. These are particularly helpful for soloing elite quests or accidental overpulls.

Avoid buying too many, as once you hit level 81 you can acquire Silvermoon Health Potion Icon Silvermoon Health Potion, which is significantly better and cheaper to make.

Certain consumables can dramatically improve leveling flow:

  • Goblin Glider Kit Icon Goblin Glider Kit
  • Gunshoes Icon Gunshoes or Potion of the Reborn Cheetah Icon Potion of the Reborn Cheetah
  • Light-Step Hoofplates Icon Light-Step Hoofplates
  • Thunderous Drums Icon Thunderous Drums
  • Draught of Silent Footfalls Icon Draught of Silent Footfalls
  • Fried Bonefish Icon Fried Bonefish or Bear Tartare Icon Bear Tartare
2.

Leveling Talents

You unlock the Talent Trees at Level 10. Further below is the recommended Leveling Talent path. If you are still leveling up to Level 80 feel free to pick either of the leveling builds.

2.1.

Archon Leveling Build

This build gives you a leveling build that is centered around big damage with Mind Flay: Insanity Icon Mind Flay: Insanity and Halo Icon Halo while still relying on baseline damage from your main damage over time effects.

If you are just starting your journey into Midnight, we have a Level 80 import string for you. You can follow the point-by-point allocation of the below tree once you start gaining levels in Midnight.

Use the following to switch which leveling build rotation is shown.

The builds suggested for leveling are focused around DoTs and moving quickly through the leveling process. When leveling, particularly in a group, mobs will not live very long, so we prioritize just being able to get DoTs up on a target and then moving on to the next one. This lets you continuously pull mobs with Shadow Word: Pain Icon Shadow Word: Pain and Tentacle Slam Icon Tentacle Slam and let your dots do the heavy lifting for you. Once you have your DoTs active on the enemies you care about, then you can use your other spells.

The current rotation is for Archon, use the build selector above to switch this.
