Best Midnight Talents for Discipline Priest
Following multiple tuning adjustments over the course of Season 1,
Discipline has settled into a very
Void Shield focused gameplay
loop for both Raid and Mythic+ content. For both recommended talent builds, you
will find they very heavily lean into modifiers for
Power Word: Shield
as they work with Void Shield itself. Our current recommendations are as
follows:
- Raid -
Oracle, for a variety of reasons, leverages
the strength of
Void Shield better than the alternative.
Additionally, repeated nerfs to
Atonement disproportionally affect
Voidweaver comparatively. - Mythic+ -
Oracle, for similar reasons to raid, leverages
the strength of
Void Shield better than the alternative. Additionally,
the single target strength provided by
Shadow Mend is very strong in
Mythic+ content due to the much higher average target count allowing a
significant number of procs per minute.
While the Voidweaver alternatives can be played and accomplish many key levels, they are far enough behind in overall output that we do not recommend them anywhere.

Oracle Raid
Oracle Mythic+
Oracle Raid Build
This build will be your primary build for raiding content. This build focuses
on pushing strong
Atonement output via the
Mindbender,
Death's Torment, and
Inescapable Torment package during
Evangelism windows or via looking for low health targets to
snipe with
Shadow Word: Death. Utilizing
Penance exclusively as an Atonement applicator and single target
heal instead of a dps button in addition to talenting into stronger shields
via
Eternal Barrier and
Weal and Woe for strong single target
capabilities as well. This build will provide the best overall output and
will be fairly flexible although heavily reliant on the power of
Void Shield.
Oracle Mythic+ Build
This build is your primary build for Mythic+ content. This build focuses on
leveraging the immense power of
Void Shield by talenting into
Eternal Barrier,
Weal and Woe, and the final point of
Master the Darkness. Additionally, the insane strength of
Shadow Mend in situations where you can easily proc it will carry
you through your hard single target healing requirements.
Voidweaver Raid Build
This build is an alternative build for raiding content focused on the
Voidweaver Hero Talent Tree. While this build runs a lot of the same
talents as the Oracle primary build, you move away from the
Eternal Barrier path and instead take the
Greater Smite path
as
Void Blast is actually relevant output unlike
Smite.
While this build can push ok numbers in raid, its significantly less flexible in regards to its output and requires very specific timings to not quickly fall behind. Additionally, its harder to play as the timing requirements are very tight. As a result, we recommend sticking to the default build unless we specifically call out a situation where this build can shine.
Voidweaver Mythic+ Build
This build is an alternative build for Mythic+ content. Providing a
strong amount of output both with every
Shadow Word: Death
cast as well as your
Entropic Rift windows, this build
provides consistently solid Atonement healing options at the cost of weaker
single target healing output.
Note: With repeated nerfs to
Atonement, this build
is quite a bit behind in potential output. While you can easily play it in
weekly key content, it is not recommended and you will be trying significantly
harder to keep up with HPS requirements compared to the
Oracle
alternative.
Voidweaver Delve Build
This build is recommended for Delve content both solo and in groups. The Voidweaver talent tree is capable of pushing incredible amounts of damage while also keeping you and your group alive.
The builds listed above are popular recommendations, covering various different loadouts suited to each style of endgame content. Each Talent Build will have it's own rotation, and can also be manipulated further for specific types of content and to better benefit your group.

Apex Talent:
Master the Darkness
Discipline Priest's Apex talent, Master the Darkness, has 4 total ranks with
3 different effects in total. The first
Master the Darkness,
provides a chance for your next
Power Word: Shield after
casting
Penance to be turned into
Void Shield. This shield
is significantly stronger than normal and splashes to two additional nearby
allies. Your second and third ranks of Master the Darkness,
Master the Darkness, are simple passive nodes increasing both your
overall
Atonement healing and all shadow damage per rank.
Finally, your fourth rank of Master the Darkness,
Master the Darkness,
causes a percentage of your
Void Shield amount to be reflected back
as damage when absorbed. This damage does contribute to healing through
Atonement, making this talent incredibly powerful.
From a rotation perspective, this talent is not particularly difficult to use.
Whenever you get a proc, use it before you cast your next
Penance to ensure you do not waste a potential proc. Additionally,
you can delay your cast to line it up with a major damage event to abuse
the reflect damage contributing to Atonement healing.
TCIn-depth Void Shield Explanation
The specific way that Void Shield procs work is based on a three card deck system. So while it looks like RNG at a high level, there is a level of predictability to the procs. Imagine you have 3 cards in a deck. One of those cards reads "Void Shield Proc", while the other two read "No Proc". Every time you cast Penance, you draw a card from the deck. This continues until the deck is empty, at which point you are given a fresh deck with the same distribution of cards. This means that you are guaranteed to get a Void Shield proc every three casts of Penance but you cannot predict which cast it will happen on in that set of three. Additionally, there is no way to track where you are in the deck with the default UI.
With the deck system working as it does, there are two extreme edges of potential RNG that you can experience. Getting a proc on the first cast of a fresh deck followed by getting a proc on the last cast of your next deck would leave you with 4 no proc casts of penance in between the two. This is the largest dry streak you can have with this system. Additionally, getting a Void Shield proc on the last card of the first deck followed by the first card of the second deck will give you two back to back procs with two no proc casts on either side.
Understanding how this deck system works can allow you to, in the moment, have some level of subconscious tracking of where you are likely to get a proc per cast giving you a small amount of control over an otherwise RNG based effect.
Hero Talents
Starting at level 71, Hero Talents allow players the ability to shape and focus their
gameplay by picking one of two mutually exclusive options.
Oracle
and
Voidweaver are the options given to Discipline Priest.
Oracle
The beginning node of the tree,
Guiding Light, provides an additional
charge of Penance, providing a large amount of flexibility and control in
your output. Other nodes like
Preventive Measures,
Prophet's Insight,
Prompt Prognosis, and the immensely
powerful
Twinsight all push the power of Penance. Unfortunately due
to the fact that Penance applies Atonement when directly cast on an ally
but not via Twinsight, we almost exclusively use Penance as an Atonement
applicator and single target heal as Oracle, allowing the offensive bolts
from Twinsight to provide the Atonement healing.
With Penance applying Atonement, Twinsight provides some significant value in
regards to simply floating a non-insignificant amount of Atonements via
simply pressing Penance on cooldown. Combine this with the longer
Atonement duration via
Preemptive Care and you have a strong
combination of near constant output.
Oracle also provides some solid bonuses to
Power Word: Shield via
Preventive Measures and
Waste No Time. Combine this with
nodes on the Discipline tree like
Weal and Woe and
Eternal Barrier and pressing Power Word: Shield often
provides significant value.
Oracle synergizes incredibly well with Discipline's new Apex Talent due to
the fact that
Void Shield inherits
Power Word: Shield
modifiers.
Voidweaver
Voidweaver focuses entirely on
Entropic Rift. Casting
Mind Blast creates a rift that deals damage to all enemies within.
This rift grows in power as you cast
Penance, making it larger
and stronger. During the duration of the rift, your smite is transformed
into
Void Blast, which is a significantly more powerful version.
When the rift expires, it collapses and deals a large burst of damage,
which can be a signfiicant amount of healing.
Voidweaver also provides
Voidwraith, which is a pet that is summoned
after the rift expires. This pet's attacks heal allies via
Atonement
and synergizes well with talents in the Discipline tree like
Inescapable Torment and
Death's Torment.
This Hero Tree also has a very large modifier for
Mind Blast via
Overwhelming Shadows. Between all of the
above mentioned effects, this tree pushes a significant amount of power
into Mind Blast as a button, but as a result can leave you feeling quite
weak when it is on cooldown. This spec also suffers from a lack of strong
single target healing options unlike
Oracle.
PvP Talents (War Mode)
In Midnight, there remains the option to go into "War Mode." Enabling War Mode provides the following benefits:
- PvP talents enabled in the outdoor world.
- 10% increase in World Quest rewards at maximum level.
- 10% more experience gained while leveling.
- Earn Conquest Points, which can reward gear every week.
With the benefits of enabling War Mode for PvE content minimal in this expansion, it is not recommended to enable the feature. War Mode remains an attractive option for leveling purposes due to the increased experience gain.
In this section, we will rank the PvP talents best for leveling and doing solo / small group PvE content. Below is a ranking of Discipline Priest-specific PvP talents. Inner Light and Shadow is a toggleable ability that grants you either
10% increased spell damage and
Atonement healing or 15% less Mana cost
on healing spells. Leaving this on the damage increase portion while leveling
will result in a solid DPS and survivability gain.
Dark Archangel increases your damage and the damage of all
allies with your
Atonement by 15% for 8 seconds. This is great for
small group world content where giving your group a DPS buff will be more
impactful than taking a small boost to your own damage via any of the above
three talents.- Your third option is very flexible as the remaining options do not provide much raw DPS value. Pick whatever seems fun to you for defensive/healing value.
