Survival Hunter Gameplay and Rotation Guide

Welcome to our Rotation page for Survival Hunters. On this page, you will find everything you need to know about actually playing the spec in Raiding and Mythic+ scenarios.

The rotation here, aside from the more concrete openers, is laid out in a conditional priority list. Essentially, for every single spell that you cast, you should cast the highest-priority spell you can, for which the conditions are met. After the spell is cast, you should start over from the top of the priority list, and repeat the process.

The buttons below can be used to select between curated single-target and AoE/Mythic+ loadouts. You can also use the switches below to add or remove individual talents you may also be using.

Single-Target Opener for Survival Hunter

Ensure Hunter's Mark Icon Hunter's Mark is active on your primary target.

  1. Pre-cast your Algeth'ar Puzzle Box Icon Algeth'ar Puzzle Box around 2 seconds before combat begins, or 3 seconds before if you are pre-casting a Bomb in the next step.
  2. Pre-cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb around 1 sec before combat begins, and Harpoon Icon Harpoon/Disengage Icon Disengage to close the distance to the target.
  3. Kill Command Icon Kill Command
  4. Use your Potion, Racials, etc.
  5. Takedown Icon Takedown
  6. Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb
  7. Kill Command Icon Kill Command
  8. Boomstick Icon Boomstick
  9. Kill Command Icon Kill Command
  10. Continue with the priority list as described below.
1.2.

Single-Target Priority List for Survival Hunter

Below is the priority system that describes the optimal single-target rotation for Survival Hunter.

1.3.

Tip of the Spear

The golden rule of Survival Hunter is that every ability must be "Tipped" via Tip of the Spear Icon Tip of the Spear, a buff granted by Kill Command Icon Kill Command which grants 2 stacks of it thanks to Primal Surge Icon Primal Surge. The general flow of the spec is Kill Command Icon Kill Command > 2 Tipped abilities according to the priority list > repeat. Some abilities do not have to be Tipped, and those are explicitly noted below.

  1. Cast Kill Command Icon Kill Command if you have no more than 1 Tip stack, and Howl of the Pack Leader Icon Howl of the Pack Leader is up and ready.
  2. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown. You want to enter it with at least 2 Tip stacks, and should use Kill Command Icon Kill Command to prepare this right before popping Takedown, ideally without overcapping on your Tip stacks.
  3. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown. You want to enter it with no Tip stacks, and should dump all your Tip stacks right before Takedown comes off cooldown to achieve this.
  4. Cast Flamefang Pitch Icon Flamefang Pitch on cooldown. No need to Tip it.
  5. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb on cooldown.
  6. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb if it is within 5 sec of reaching 2 charges.
  7. Cast Boomstick Icon Boomstick on cooldown.
  8. Cast Raptor Strike Icon Raptor Strike. You must have Tip if it is a Raptor Swipe Icon Raptor Swipe. If not, it does not matter to Tip it. Every 2nd Raptor is a Swipe.
  9. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb on cooldown.
  10. Cast Kill Command Icon Kill Command as a filler for Focus and Tip stacks.
  11. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown as a sort of filler even if its conditions from higher in the priority are not necessarily met.
  12. Cast Kill Command Icon Kill Command if you have no Tip of the Spear Icon Tip of the Spear left.
  13. Cast Boomstick Icon Boomstick on cooldown if you have no Sentinel's Mark Icon Sentinel's Mark proc on your target.
  14. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb if you have a Sentinel's Mark Icon Sentinel's Mark proc, or if it is ~5 sec away from reaching 2 charges.
  15. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown. You want to enter it with at least 2 Tip stacks, and should use Kill Command Icon Kill Command to prepare this right before popping Takedown, ideally without overcapping on your Tip stacks.
  16. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown. You want to enter it with no Tip stacks, and should dump all your Tip stacks right before Takedown comes off cooldown to achieve this.
  17. Cast Boomstick Icon Boomstick on cooldown.
  18. Cast Moonlight Chakram Icon Moonlight Chakram on cooldown. This ability is available one time during every Takedown Icon Takedown. It must be used before Takedown expires, no matter what.
  19. Cast Flamefang Pitch Icon Flamefang Pitch on cooldown. No need to Tip it.
  20. Cast Raptor Strike Icon Raptor Strike. You must have Tip if it is a Raptor Swipe Icon Raptor Swipe. If not, it does not matter to Tip it. Every 2nd Raptor is a Swipe.
  21. Cast Kill Command Icon Kill Command as a filler for Focus and Tip stacks.
  22. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown as a sort of filler even if its conditions from higher in the priority are not necessarily met.
1.4.

AoE Opener for Survival Hunter

Ensure Hunter's Mark Icon Hunter's Mark is active on your primary target.

  1. In a "white room" scenario, pre-casting Algeth'ar Puzzle Box Icon Algeth'ar Puzzle Box 2 sec before combat is optimal. In a real M+ scenario, however, you will not have a pulltimer or be able to reliably do this, so I recommend just not.
  2. Kill Command Icon Kill Command. If the pull is not yet fully gathered, simply do your "base" rotation without cooldowns, making sure to Misdirection Icon Misdirection. You do not want to use Takedown until everything is fully stacked.
  3. Use your Potion, Racials, etc.
  4. Takedown Icon Takedown
  5. Kill Command Icon Kill Command
  6. Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb
  7. Boomstick Icon Boomstick
  8. Kill Command Icon Kill Command
  9. Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb
  10. Continue with the priority list as described below.

AoE Priority List for Survival Hunter

Below is the priority system that describes the optimal AoE rotation for Survival Hunter.

1.6.

  5. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb if it is about to reach 2 charges.
  6. Cast Boomstick Icon Boomstick on cooldown.
  7. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb on cooldown.
  11. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb on cooldown as a very low-priority filler. You can cast these without Tip, but remember that this only ever comes up if you truly can cast nothing else, even Kill Command Icon Kill Command.
  12. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown as a sort of filler even if its conditions from higher in the priority are not necessarily met.
  13. Cast Kill Command Icon Kill Command if you have no Tip of the Spear Icon Tip of the Spear left.
  14. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb if doing so would bring Boomstick Icon Boomstick off cooldown. It reduces Boomstick's cooldown by 2 sec per target hit, up to 10 sec at 5 targets, so you will have to do a bit of math on the fly here.
  15. Cast Boomstick Icon Boomstick on cooldown.
  16. Cast Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb if you have a Sentinel's Mark Icon Sentinel's Mark proc, or if it is ~5 sec away from reaching 2 charges.
  17. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown. You want to enter it with at least 2 Tip stacks, and should use Kill Command Icon Kill Command to prepare this right before popping Takedown, ideally without overcapping on your Tip stacks.
  18. Cast Takedown Icon Takedown. You want to enter it with no Tip stacks, and should dump all your Tip stacks right before Takedown comes off cooldown to achieve this.
  19. Cast Moonlight Chakram Icon Moonlight Chakram on cooldown. This ability is available one time during every Takedown Icon Takedown. It must be used before Takedown expires, no matter what.
  20. Cast Flamefang Pitch Icon Flamefang Pitch on cooldown.
  21. Cast Raptor Strike Icon Raptor Strike. You must have Tip if it is a Raptor Swipe Icon Raptor Swipe. If not, it does not matter to Tip it. Every 2nd Raptor is a Swipe.
  22. Cast Kill Command Icon Kill Command as a filler for Focus and Tip stacks.

Midnight Season 1 Tier Set

Your Tier Set makes Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb more powerful, increasing its damage and causing it to trigger additional pet damage via Strike As One Icon Strike As One. This does not change your rotational approach in any way.

Class and Spec Mechanics Explained

In order to better explain the specific usage and benefits of the Survival Hunter kit, we have compiled a more detailed explanation on individual parts of our rotation, from important rotational mechanics that you need to pay attention to, to cooldowns and how to use them, so you can reach your full potential when playing Survival Hunter.

Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb Raptor Swipe Icon Raptor Swipe Apex Talents
3.1.

Wildfire Bomb

Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb is a core ability for Survival. Its damage is split into its "direct" damage, which is buffed by Tip of the Spear Icon Tip of the Spear, but it also leaves a 6-second DoT which is unaffected.

One of the most crucial things to understand about Bomb is how it targets. You throw it at a target, and then the Bomb explodes once it reaches that target. The Bomb explodes in a cone behind the target and a small radius circle around the target. In other words, if the mob is tightly bunched with a bunch of other mobs, then Bomb will hit them all, regardless of how you are facing.

If, however, the target are a little bit more spread out, then you will need to rely on the cone behind the target, and "behind" in this case is relative to your position. In other words, you are effectively throwing your Bomb through your target, so that it will hit the ones behind it. Angling and positioning your character appropriately relative to the targets you want to hit is therefore essential to maximizing this ability, particularly in Mythic+.

3.2.

Raptor Swipe Apex Talents

Raptor Swipe Icon Raptor Swipe causes our Raptor Strike Icon Raptor Strike button to randomly "upgrade" itself to an AoE version of the same button, which also does significantly increased single-target damage. This happens all on its own, and does not impact our rotational priorities much.

Important Cooldowns for Survival Hunter

Takedown Icon Takedown
4.1.

Takedown

Takedown Icon Takedown is Survival's primary cooldown. It is a relatively simple 1:30 cooldown that can be reduced to a 1-minute cooldown with 2 points of the Savagery Icon Savagery Talent. It deals heavy damage on use, and then increases all your damage by 20% for 10 sec, and doubles your auto-attack speed.

The most unorthodox thing about this cooldown is its extremely short duration. In WoW, the vast majority of DPS cooldowns are 15-20 seconds long, but Takedown only lasts 10 seconds. This means that if we want to pack heavy damage-dealers into its duration, we do not have a lot of time to do so, which informs our opener choices and occasionally Trinket choices (30-second on-use trinkets are not so great, for example).

4.1.1.

Hero Talent Impacts of Takedown

For Sentinel, Takedown Icon Takedown's button will turn into Moonlight Chakram Icon Moonlight Chakram once pressed. This ability deals heavy damage, and can even reduce the cooldown of Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bomb by 10 sec if Stalk and Strike Icon Stalk and Strike is chosen. We only get one use in our Takedown Icon Takedown, but because it takes quite a long time to do all of its damage, we are incentivized to use it somewhat early on in our opener. If we do run Stalk and Strike Icon Stalk and Strike, it is also important to dump our Wildfire Bomb Icon Wildfire Bombs before using it, so as not to waste the cooldown reduction.

For Pack Leader, Takedown Icon Takedown immediately procs Howl of the Pack Leader Icon Howl of the Pack Leader, causing your next Kill Command Icon Kill Command to summon a Beast. This "stacks" with the naturally occurring, cooldown-based Howl procs, and you do not need to worry about sending Howl procs before activating Takedown Icon Takedown. In addition, your first Kill Command inside Takedown Icon Takedown will also launch a Stampede Icon Stampede. This is a roughly 40 yards long "line" of beasts that charge at your target, and it gets placed when you press the Kill Command. It deals heavy damage to all enemies inside it over 7 sec.

Because this effect is placed the moment you cast your first Kill Command Icon Kill Command in Takedown Icon Takedown and does not move, and because it is a long line that originates from your character position, aiming and positioning this line is essential, particularly in AoE situations.

You want to place the Stampede in such a way that it will cover as many targets as possible, for as long as possible. Positioning your character so that the line extends through not just where the mobs currently are, but if they are moving, where you think they might be going, is essential to making optimal use of Stampede.

4.2.

Volley

Volley Icon Volley is a talented 45-second (or 30-second) cooldown mostly associated with AoE. It is actually a fairly simple button, but there are common misconceptions about its use and value.

Essentially, because of the nature of the Precise Shots Icon Precise Shots mechanic we explained in the previous session, even though Volley Icon Volley gives us Trick Shots Icon Trick Shots, it is actually relatively uncommon for us to make any use of this "free" Trick Shots Icon Trick Shots whatsoever. Because we tend to run Talents where Aimed Shot Icon Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire Icon Rapid Fire both give Precise Shots Icon Precise Shots, we have to use a PS Spender in-between all such casts. Because of this, even if Trick Shots Icon Trick Shots was permanently active, we would actually play more or less the same; the need to spend Precise Shots Icon Precise Shots is so pressing, and all of the Trick Shots Icon Trick Shots that Multi-Shot Icon Multi-Shot also gives is sort of a happy accident.

This limits Volley Icon Volley's role to two things; a simple damage dealer, and a Double Tap Icon Double Tap activator.

The Double Tap Icon Double Tap Talent does not stack, and it triggers off of Trueshot Icon Trueshot and Volley Icon Volley. In many cases, it is very tempting to cast Volley Icon Volley right before or after entering Trueshot Icon Trueshot, but this is a trap. When running this Talent, it is mandatory that we get a Aimed Shot Icon Aimed Shot or Rapid Fire Icon Rapid Fire in between our Trueshot Icon Trueshot and our Volley Icon Volley, whichever order we are using them in.

We recommend sticking to a simple rule; when running Volley Icon Volley and Double Tap Icon Double Tap, start your Trueshot Icon Trueshot windows like: Trueshot Icon Trueshot, Aimed Shot Icon Aimed Shot, Volley Icon Volley.
