Retribution Paladin DPS Spec, Builds, and Talents — 12.0.5
On this page, you will find out the best talents for your Retribution Paladin in World of Warcraft Patch 12.0.5. We also have default talent builds for various types of content, such as raiding or Mythic+. If you play with Warmode on, we have your PvP talents covered as well.
Best Midnight Talents for Retribution Paladin
Retribution can choose between
Crusading Strikes and
Templar Strikes for different types of Holy Power generation in its
builds. Although both talents are competitive, in general
Templar
tends to favor
Crusading Strikes while
Herald of the Sun prefers
Templar Strikes. There are no other talent changes needed to swap
between them.
Templar Single-Target Talents
This build is best for pure single-target situations.
Radiant Glory can be taken instead of
Execution Sentence for a
more consistent damage profile with better passive cleave, but less funnel.

Raid Talent Swaps
Although the Raid build linked above is a strong default build in most situations,
each individual boss can have talents swapped depending on the profile your raid needs.
The options listed here are strong swaps to make for each encounter,
but you can still find success with alternative builds on each one too.
The swaps listed are assuming the
Templar Raid single-target build
as a baseline.
Imperator Averzian
- Take:
Blessed Champion - Drop:
Judgment of Justice
Radiant Glory can also be taken over
Execution Sentence for
stronger cleave damage and more flexible cooldown timings.
Vorasius
- Although a single-target build is the best choice for Vorasius, there is
currently a bug that causes
Execution Sentence to not be correctly applied
sometimes, which makes
Radiant Glory a more consistent choice. - Take:
Radiant Glory - Drop:
Execution Sentence
Fallen-King Salhadaar
- Pure single-target is fine here, but picking up minimal passive cleave talents for the Orbs is also a decent option.
- Take:
Blessed Champion - Drop:
Judgment of Justice
Vaelgor and Ezzorak
- The distance mechanics on this boss change depending on the difficulty, so some talents that are useful on Mythic are not useful on Normal or Heroic, since the distance is too big for them to cleave correctly.
- For difficulties below Mythic, there are plenty of situations where burst AoE is useful on this encounter,
but many of the talents that are useful for consistent AoE situations aren't actually
useful here. For example,
Blade of Vengeance and
Tempest of the Lightbringer
won't contribute much damage, since the phases you are able to hit both bosses you still
won't have enough range to cleave with
Blade of Justice, and you will still
cast
Final Verdict instead of
Divine Storm on two targets.
Blessed Champion is a strong option here, since the spells it affects will cleave
two targets on this encounter.
Radiant Glory can also be a consideration
as it can make Voidorb damage more consistent. - On Normal or Heroic:
- Take:
Blessed Champion - Drop:
Judgment of Justice
- Take:
- The Mythic version of this encounter has timings that work much better for
Radiant Glory and will allow the bosses to be close enough to be cleaved
with
Blade of Vengeance.
Tempest of the Lightbringer is still not
recommended since casting
Divine Storm is worse than
Final Verdict on 2 targets. - On Mythic:
- Take:
Blessed Champion,
Blade of Vengeance,
Radiant Glory,
Sanctify - Drop:
Judgment of Justice, 2 points in
Heart of the Crusader,
Execution Sentence
- Take:
Lightblinded Vanguard
- This is an encounter where you can consistently always cleave either two or three targets. This makes AoE talents more valuable, although you will still end up focusing and cleaving off a priority target when you are able to hit two enemies.
- Take:
Blessed Champion,
Blade of Vengeance, and
Sanctify - Drop: 2 points in
Heart of the Crusader and
Judgment of Justice
Radiant Glory can also be taken over
Execution Sentence with little overall difference.
An alternative option is to run full cleave talents and only use
Divine Storm as a regular spender,
even on two targets. For this, you would drop
Jurisdiction and
Final Verdict
and instead run
Tempest of the Lightbringer and
Judgment of Justice.
Crown of the Cosmos
- Although there are opportunities to cleave on this encounter, all the important
areas for damage on Heroic are single-target - all cleave can be done passively. This makes
a pure single-target build the best choice. Timings for
Execution Sentence
also work very well on this encounter. - For Mythic, cleave talents are a lot more useful. Taking
Blessed Champion
over
Judgment of Justice is worth it on this difficulty.
Chimaerus
- Although single-target damage does still matter, there are a lot of opportunities for useful passive cleave on this encounter, which makes some AoE options pretty attractive.
- Take:
Blessed Champion,
Blade of Vengeance,
Radiant Glory,
Sanctify - Drop:
Judgment of Justice, 2 points in
Heart of the Crusader,
Execution Sentence
Belo'ren
- For the Bird phase, there will be adds that spawn consistently that can be cleaved.
Blessed Champion is useful for these, but
Blade of Vengeance won't
damage them if you're cleaving off the boss. - Take:
Blessed Champion - Drop:
Judgment of Justice
Midnight Falls
- The regular single target build is the best option for this encounter. Although there are adds that spawn, the timings line up perfectly with normal burst cooldowns, and additional AoE talents will provide little to not benefit for the stronger passive cleave during burst windows.
Templar Cleave/Dungeon Talents
This build drops the worst single-target talents for stronger AoE
options. For more AoE damage,
Jurisdiction can be swapped for
Tempest of the Lightbringer. Swapping
Radiant Glory for
Execution Sentence
will also give a stronger priority damage profile that also brings funnel, but
less overall AoE damage.
The main choices to make in Mythic+ for damage are just between whether you want to prioritize
single-target or AoE damage. For more AoE, the only realistic option to take is
Tempest of the Lightbringer, which you would take instead of
Jurisdiction.
For more single-target, you can take
Execution Sentence instead of
Radiant Glory. This also gives you stronger funnel and priority damage,
which can be stronger on higher keys especially. Both swaps will roughly gain and lose
the same amount between single-target and AoE.
Delves and Open World Talents
This build works best for short-duration multi-target combat and frequent movement from enemy to enemy. For longer sustained combat where enemies live for more than a few seconds like higher level Delves, the regular Mythic+ builds should be used instead.
Herald of the Sun Single-Target Talents
This build is best for pure single-target situations.
Crusading Strikes can also be used instead of
Templar Strikes.
Herald of the Sun Cleave/Dungeon Talents
This build drops the worst single-target talents for stronger AoE options.
The builds listed above are popular recommendations, covering various different loadouts suited to each style of endgame content. Each Talent Build will have it's own rotation, and can also be manipulated further for specific types of content and to better benefit your group.

Apex Talent:
Light Within
The new Apex Talent for Retribution is
Light Within. This provides
bonus effects to
Art of War or
Righteous Cause, increasing the
damage of the next
Blade of Justice cast and causing it to also deal
additional AoE damage. It also increases Holy Power spender damage during
Avenging Wrath. Prioritizing using
Blade of Justice when procs
occur is be a sizeable damage increase.
Hero Talents for Retribution Paladin
Retribution has two Hero Talent trees,
Templar and
Herald of the Sun. These each have different visuals and gameplay,
augmenting the core Retribution talents and abilities.
Templar
Templar gives you access to
Hammer of Light after casting
Wake of Ashes, which is a separate Holy Power spender that does
significant AoE damage. It also has extra bonus effects such as
Divine Hammer and
Empyrean Hammer that do additional AoE damage
passively.
Herald of the Sun
Herald of the Sun procs
Dawnlights when
Wake of Ashes
is cast, which are powerful DoT effects that grant extra bonuses while active.
It also significantly increases the power of
Hammer of Wrath through
talents like
Walk Into Light.
PvP Talents (War Mode)
"War Mode" is an opt-in feature that enables cross-faction PvP combat in the open-world. Enabling War Mode provides the following benefits:
- PvP talents enabled in the outdoor world.
- 10% increase in World Quest rewards at maximum level.
- 10% more experience gained while leveling.
- Earn Conquest Points, which can reward gear every week.
With the benefits of enabling War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is recommended enabling the feature to maximize your leveling and rewards at maximum level. However, you will make yourself available for open-world PvP, and the possibility of being "ganked" while leveling or doing World Quests exists.
No War Mode talents have any impact on open-world PvE content for Retribution. For PvP talents, see the guide above.
