On this page, you will find out the best talents for your Devourer Demon Hunter in World of Warcraft Patch 12.0.5. We also have default talent builds for various types of content, such as raiding or Mythic+. If you play with Warmode on, we have your PvP talents covered as well.
Best Midnight Talents for Devourer Demon Hunter
Over the course of Season 1 in Midnight, Devourer has settled quite firmly on one playstyle, cemented by some of the recent patch changes. While there are a lot of potential options available on the tree, our current recommendations are as follows:
- Single Target - Following 12.0.5 changes,
Annihilator is
significantly ahead of
Void-Scarred in all Season 1 encounters. While
Void-Scarred can be played if you enjoy the playstyle, it's firmly
behind. - AoE - Following 12.0.5 changes,
Annihilator is now better
at all keystone levels. While
Void-Scarred can be competitive at lower
keystone levels, we recommend playing
Annihilator in all scenarios.
In pure single target scenarios,
Annihilator pulls ahead of
Void-Scarred, while dealing much more cleave damage. Due to this,
we recommend playing it on all boss fights this tier. In AoE encounters,
Annihilator remains ahead due to its stronger
Collapsing Star
casts.
Annihilator and
Void-Scarred maintain their gap in
AOE, but
Void-Scarred can be viable at lower key levels if you prefer
that playstyle, due to its faster, more frequent damage.
Quick Start Import Codes:
Devourer Single Target - Annihilator
Devourer AoE - Annihilator
Devourer Delves - Void Scarred
Annihilator Single-Target Build
Annihilator is firmly ahead of its counterpart
Void-Scarred
in Raids, benefitting greatly from the recent 12.0.5 changes. Pair that with its
easier flex talents that allow it to include more cleave tools, and it becomes
the recommended choice.
Annihilator AoE Build
Annihilator pulls further ahead in multi-target scenarios.
It can leverage its higher damage from
Collapsing Star, as well as
access to a frequent AoE tool with
Voidfall. As such,
it is currently the recommend choice.
Annihilator Delve Build
In Delves,
Annihilator is well suited to the frequent
stop-and-start pull playstyle, allowing you to alter your pace based on your
Void Metamorphosis state.
Doomsayer also allows it to set up
quickly between each area, while also taking advantage of Devourer's great
defense toolkit. Unfortunately, it's just a little less versatile than its
competitor, so serves as an alternative instead.
Void-Scarred Single-Target Build
Void-Scarred has received some negative changes going into 12.0.5,
reducing much of the passive damage gains from the tree, and the specs reliance
on
Reap. It still provides good single-target and modest cleave, while
also having slightly less reliance on
Void Metamorphosis, but
struggles if encounter design prevents it from weaving into melee.
Void-Scarred AoE Build
While the gap between the trees widens in AoE, and
Void-Scarred falls behind.
Voidsurge provides powerful AoE burst on a short cooldown cycle, allowing
for frequent
Void Metamorphosis windows with high damage.
Void-Scarred also leans into
Eradicate, leveraging this as a frequent high damage option. It has
lower top end due to less damage modifiers on
Collapsing Star, as such,
It is currently not the recommended choice.
Void-Scarred Delve Build
In Delves,
Void-Scarred is perfectly suited to the pull
cadence, and allows you to adjust how much you grab at once depending on your
Void Metamorphosis state. Its high movement, frequent bursts of damage,
and strong single-target built into its standard build makes it an ideal pick.
Pair that with the strong defense toolkit of Devourer, and it becomes the
recommended choice.
In Single-Target,
Annihilator builds play very similarly to their M+ counterparts.
It aims to cycle Fury and Souls as quickly as possible for
Void Metamorphosis.
When paired with
Emptiness, this allows for longer windows that
leverage
Impending Apocalypse, allowing for big
Collapsing Star
payoffs. Some additional notes are:
Emptiness is always taken in single-target builds on the final choice
node. The ramping Haste provided is key to extending
Void Metamorphosis
as long as possible. The one exception to this is on L'ura, where
Soul Glutton allows for better timings to hit the
adds in phase one.
Tempered Soul is always taken over
Spontaneous Immolation,
as the two charges allow smoother rotation and a shorter ramp time, and you will rarely leverage the resets in group content.
-
Since
Doomsayer only activates a single time during single-target
encounters, it opts for the raw
Voidfall throughput provided by
Harness the Cosmos.
The
Annihilator AoE build is very similar to its single-target loadout.
Now that we are in the season proper, as pull size and duration has increased so
to has the value of
Emptiness which it plays into. This provides longer
Void Metamorphosis windows, and thus more casts of
Collapsing Star.
Some additional notes are:
Harness the Cosmos is chosen over
Doomsayer due to the more
consistent damage, and the increase in boss damage. If you are in lower keys, or keys
where your tank is not chain pulling constantly, then
Doomsayer pulls ahead.
Annihilator finishes the entire right side capstone area to reach
Eradicate. This helps convert
Reap into an AoE tool
after channelling
Void Ray, allowing you to apply the damage
increases from
Moment of Craving and
Soulshaper for
extra value.
As a Hero tree,
Void-Scarred focuses much more on melee abilities.
This is to take advantage of its Demon Form empowered equivalents to trigger
the keystone effect,
Voidsurge, and as such are required picks to
build the tree properly. Currently, due to tuning in Midnight
Void-Scarred
only uses the melee suite of talents to amplify its
Voidsurge burst, and only uses each melee ability
once per
Void Metamorphosis window. Some additional notes are:
-
Cull and
Reap are a core part of the rotation, and most of
the talents that buff it (
Second Helping,
Soulshaper,
Moment of Craving,
Devourer's Edge) are taken to amplify it.
-
Void-Scarred is currently better suited to forgo the apex talent, as
Collapsing Star is fairly weak,
and
The Hunt received buffs in the 12.0.5 patch. Instead, it keys heavily into these melee talents, taking the entire package
and revolving around frequent, short burst windows from
Soul Glutton and
Void-Scarred.
Much of the
Void-Scarred toolkit is well suited to AoE scenarios
due to many melee talents scaling into AoE, alongside
Voidsurge
triggers. Due to the shorter, more frequent pulls in AoE,
Soul Glutton
has even more value, suiting it well to having short, bursty cooldown
windows available for each pull.
Eradicate also
give some strong damage both outside and inside of
Void Metamorphosis
due to the buff
Burning Blades provides. Some additional notes are:
Void-Scarred chooses to take all the capstones, forgoing the Apex
talent.
Collapsing Star is fairly weak for
Void-Scarred, and
thus it is not efficient to invest so many points into it.
Void-Scarred also finishes the entire right side capstone area to
reach
Eradicate. This helps convert
Reap into an AoE
tool after channelling
Void Ray, allowing you to amplify the damage
increases from
Moment of Craving and
Soulshaper further.
Eradicate's damage is increased by
Burning Blades as well,
making it an excellent pickup.
The builds listed above are popular recommendations, covering various different loadouts suited to each style of endgame content. Each Talent Build will have it's own rotation, and can also be manipulated further for specific types of content and to better benefit your group.

Apex Talent:
Midnight
New in Midnight is the Apex Talent system, a sequential group of talents which
unlock as you acquire each specialization tree talent point on the journey from 80
to 90. These are grouped together in 4, with different effects at each level.
Unlike other talents, they are all in one node, with each point invested enhancing
the effect. The Devourer Demon Hunter Apex is
Midnight,
providing significant benefits to
Collapsing Star:
Midnight — Your
Collapsing Star will now always Critically Strike.
Midnight — Has two points, increasing all Cosmic damage dealt
by 3%, and increases the Critical Strike damage of
Collapsing Star by 50%
of your Critical Strike chance per point. This bonus is additive with
Calamitous.
Midnight — Upon entering
Void Metamorphosis, instantly
spawn 5 Soul Fragments and immediately gain access to one cast of
Collapsing Star.
While not every build takes the Apex Talents, for those that do, it significantly
increases the power of
Collapsing Star, turning it into one of our
strongest damage sources. The final point in particular also increases the access
to up-front casts, making each
Void Metamorphosis cast more impactful.
Hero Talents
Beyond being a brand new specialization already, Devourer also brings
with it a new Hero tree,
Annihilator. This is shared with Vengeance,
while
Void-Scarred is functionally equivalent to Havoc's
Fel-Scarred. In the two tabs below we've covered the major talents and
key effects that influence your build depending on your selection.
Annihilator
Annihilator focuses on its keystone effect,
Voidfall. A variety
of Devourer abilities (most importantly
Consume and
Void Ray)
grant a stack, and upon reaching three, your next
Reap cast will consume
them. Each stack consumed calls down a powerful Void Meteor, dealing heavy Cosmic
damage to targets and generating 2 Soul Fragments. The playstyle is relatively
simple, only requiring you to slot in additional
Reap casts to consume
stacks as they cap out.
For the offensive choice node,
Harness the Cosmos
provides a more general throughput increase to
Voidfall, while
Doomsayer is tailored to Mythic+ and situations where you can
consistently leave combat to refresh the effect.
For defense and mobility,
Phase Shift grants 2% damage reduction per stack
of
Voidfall present, with
Final Hour allowing it to persist after
you consume them.
Path to Oblivion adds 3% movement speed on top of that,
though adding a third charge to
Shift with
State of Matter is
generally preferable.
Void-Scarred
Void-Scarred provides a variety of benefits during your
Void Metamorphosis
effect. Most importantly,
Voidblade,
Hungering Slash, and
The Hunt
are upgraded into more powerful versions while active. Additionally, the first
cast of each of these trigger a
Voidsurge for extra AoE Cosmic damage.
This slots in over the regular Devourer playstyle, but heavily
encourages using a hybrid melee approach, leaping in and out of range to activate
these effects.
For the three choice nodes on the tree, there are the following options:
Wave of Debilitation vs.
Pursuit of Angriness - both are niche
effects, with
Pursuit of Angriness generally being better for the small
amount of extra mobility vs. the extra CC utility of
Wave of Debilitation.
Set Fire to the Pain vs.
Improved Soul Rending - this is a choice
between passive damage reduction or self sustain. Generally speaking, staggering some
damage with
Set Fire to the Pain so you can leech it back up is the preferred
choice, but it's quite minor.
Student of Suffering vs.
Flamebound - due to the current
tuning state of melee abilities, the benefits of
Flamebound
focusing on
Hungering Slash is pretty weak.
Student of Suffering
on the other hand significantly improves Fury generation while also buffing extra Mastery,
making it the preferred choice.
PvP Talents (War Mode)
"War Mode" is an optional feature that enables open-world PvP encounters that confer some benefits when active:
- Grants access to PvP talents in the open world.
- 10% increase in World Quest rewards at max level.
- 10% more experience gained while leveling.
- Earn Conquest Points which can reward gear every week.
With the benefits of War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is an optional way to maximize your leveling speed and reward potential. However, you will open yourself up to open-world PvP, so be aware of hostile enemy players who could interfere with you; this is a risk you will have to decide on your own if you want to take.
Here, we'll only be looking at PvP talents that have use cases for aiding with leveling or open-world PvE scenarios, as their PvP benefits are discussed on our PvP page. Generally, the selections are made to optimize your ability to kill enemies faster, increasing your pace when moving through content.
Armor of Souls provides additional Soul generation when you're being
attacked, ramping up the speed at which you can enter
Void Metamorphosis.
Inevitable End increases the damage of
Collapsing Star and,
more importantly, prevents it from being interrupted by any effect.
Beckon allows you to follow up each
Reap cast with an instant
Consume, providing faster setup on targets.
Surrender to the Void however has a big impact on slowing down the rate
at which you can enter
Void Metamorphosis. While it does make these
windows more explosive, the hit to frequency means it's not worth using.
Detainment,
Cover of Darkness,
Cleansed by Flame and
Glimpse all have minimal uses in PvE, due to being more focused on
crowd control tools, or pressuring enemy players, so aren't worth considering.
