On this page, you will find out the best talents for your Blood Death Knight in World of Warcraft Patch 12.0.5. We also have default talent builds for various types of content, such as raiding or Mythic+. If you play with Warmode on, we have your PvP talents covered as well.

Best Midnight Talents for Blood Death Knight

Season 1 of Midnight strongly favors different Hero Talent choices depending on content, and while there is no absolutely "unplayable" version, the differences tend to be stark. Our class and Hero Talent tree interacts very little together, making the choice more of an additional layer than a combined pick.

  • Single Target — San'layn has dominated and continues to dominate single target and priority damage for the entire expansion, thanks to balance tuning and the base design of the tree.
  • AoE — If the AoE is sustained, San'layn shines, and this is evident on Lightblinded Vanguard. If the AoE is intermittent, the timing of it will matter: is it roughly when Reaper's Mark Icon Reaper's Mark is available? If so, Deathbringer can potentially close the gap.
  • Mythic+ — The choice is broadly free here, and depends on your ability to map Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon casts to certain pulls in your route. Deathbringer is very easy to pick up and helps on upfront threat, while San'layn requires more methodical planning to yield its value.

We broadly recommend San'layn in all raid encounters this tier due to its significant lead. Deathbringer is roughly 10% behind, making it a very difficult value proposition to recommend.

For Mythic+, we recommend the opposite: players should start and get familiar with Deathbringer thanks to its plug-and-play nature in content with variable pace, and only put in the planning effort for San'layn if they desire it. The gain is there, but the effort to succeed is significantly higher, and failures are more punishing.

1.1.

San'layn Raid Build

Numerous haphazard buffs to the base kit along with the addition of Apex talents have propelled San'layn back to the fore. Though Apex talents do not grant Gift of the San'layn Icon Gift of the San'layn, the copied damage from base abilities in the kit (particularly Death Strike Icon Death Strike) is enough to make a significant difference.

1.2.

San'layn Mythic+ Build

Numerous haphazard buffs to the base kit along with the addition of Apex talents have propelled San'layn back to the fore. Though Apex talents do not grant Gift of the San'layn Icon Gift of the San'layn, the copied damage from base abilities in the kit (particularly Death Strike Icon Death Strike) is enough to make a significant difference.

Our Mythic+ build picks up Umbilicus Eternus Icon Umbilicus Eternus and Deadly Reach Icon Deadly Reach while keeping Consumption Icon Consumption, both for the on-demand damage reduction and the sheer upfront damage it deals without empowering it.

1.3.

Deathbringer Beginner-Friendly Build

The entry-level talent build we have opted for is a simplified version of Deathbringer that eschews all of the active abilities it can avoid.

1.4.

Deathbringer Raid Build

Continued buffs to the base kit with no corresponding changes to Hero Talent abilities relegated Deathbringer back to an "easy to play, lower throughput" choice. Even with this, it is not far enough behind to dismiss outright, and its 45-second burst window (instead of a strict 90 second with a requirement to game procs in between) does allow it to shine for new players and on specific situations.

1.5.

Deathbringer Delve and Mythic+ Build

Fundamentally, Deathbringer suffers the same fate in AoE: while San'layn is able to fully capitalize due to its kit amplifying Death Strike Icon Death Strike and Heart Strike Icon Heart Strike, Blood Plague Icon Blood Plague was left untouched for all of beta, along with Exterminate Icon Exterminate's AoE damage component.

It is not all doom and gloom, however; while the AoE damage difference is very significant, and San'layn once again provides significantly more priority damage, Deathbringer retains its ease of use and damage reduction advantage.

The biggest note for 12.0.5 is the outright destruction of Desecrate Icon Desecrate. The new version effectively reduces your uptime on Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay and does not deal any additional damage to compensate, with the only value being the ability to fish for Crimson Scourge Icon Crimson Scourge procs one second earlier than if you were to untalent Cleaving Strikes Icon Cleaving Strikes instead. It makes significantly more sense to pick up Blood-Soaked Ground Icon Blood-Soaked Ground for more physical damage reduction, an easier time around Essence of the Blood Queen Icon Essence of the Blood Queen and some damage benefit on top.

Another important note is on Consumption Icon Consumption in progression content. While Consumption Icon Consumption is an awkward addition to the kit, and the recent buffs to other baseline abilities have caused it to be only worth empowering to rank 1, a case can be made on progression to pick it in order to have an additional 15% damage reduction cooldown available. This comes at a cost, and as a result, we opted not to include it by default.

The point in Umbilicus Eternus Icon Umbilicus Eternus is put in purely for convenience and can be put into Sanguinary Burst Icon Sanguinary Burst for an additional ~400% AP damage per target at time of burst. This occurs mid-way through Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon, so the value of the healing it provides is relatively low.

The effect of the Desecrate Icon Desecrate change will be felt the most in Mythic+, as this is where the bulk of the value of the former incarnation of this talent was. Similarly to the single target builds, we have opted to take it out entirely.

For this specific build, we have already moved Sanguinary Burst Icon Sanguinary Burst to Umbilicus Eternus Icon Umbilicus Eternus. You are already taking a throughput hit - why not default to putting a minor pad point into something that provides more value than as San'layn?

The builds listed above are popular recommendations, covering various different loadouts suited to each style of endgame content. Each Talent Build will have it's own rotation, and can also be manipulated further for specific types of content and to better benefit your group.

Apex Talent: Dance of Midnight Icon Dance of Midnight

Blood's Apex Talents combine a thematic concept with two additional procs by granting you the ability to (randomly) spawn additional Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapons. This happens naturally while spending Runes.

Thematically, it is neat; in practice, it has led to Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon getting nerfed to accommodate this increased uptime, and has glaring problems in terms of user experience, in that these Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon copies do not trigger actual Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon talents and do not interact with them in any way.

Still, you can expect a 50% combined uptime on at least one Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon, and the initial apex talent node - Dance of Midnight Icon Dance of Midnight - causes you to occasionally amp up your next Heart Strike Icon Heart Strike.

3.

Hero Talents

Starting at level 71, Hero Talents let Blood Death Knights shape and focus their gameplay by picking one of two mutually exclusive options. Deathbringer and San'layn both add a completely new mechanic to the specialization, but they do so in a radically different way.

3.1.

San'layn

San'layn's design revolves around a maintenance buff — Essence of the Blood Queen Icon Essence of the Blood Queen. This significantly amplifies your Haste, Mastery and Death Strike Icon Death Strike damage, and can only be stacked by casting Vampiric Strike Icon Vampiric Strike — a rare proc off of Death Strike Icon Death Strike.

When you cast Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon, Vampiric Strike Icon Vampiric Strike is continuously available for its entire duration, and all benefits from Essence of the Blood Queen Icon Essence of the Blood Queen are tripled.

The core gameplay loop operates in two phases: an extreme power window every 90 seconds during Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon, and a period where you game procs to maintain your stacks of Essence of the Blood Queen Icon Essence of the Blood Queen between them. It is punishing rotationally, but the payoff is significant.

3.2.

Deathbringer

Deathbringer adds a brand new ability: Reaper's Mark Icon Reaper's Mark. This deals a small amount of upfront damage and tallies up every subsequent instance of shadow damage on the target; when it is done ramping (or expires), the mark detonates, dealing an extreme amount of damage to the target.

The most visible and memorable feature of this Hero Talent is its capstone, Exterminate Icon Exterminate. A very flashy, very effective addition to Marrowrend Icon Marrowrend, this proc causes it to deal a very large amount of bonus damage and reduces its cost.

Deathbringer is about simplicity — it trivializes the entire Bone Shield Icon Bone Shield management chore, and allows you reap a lot of benefits along the way.

4.

PvP Talents (War Mode)

While leveling, players have the option to go into "War Mode". Enabling War Mode provides the following benefits:

  • PvP talents enabled in the outdoor world.
  • 10% increase in World Quest rewards at maximum level.
  • 10% more experience gained while leveling.
  • Earn Conquest Points, which can reward gear every week.

With the benefits of enabling War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is recommended to enable the feature to maximize your leveling and rewards at maximum level. However, you will make yourself available for open-world PvP, and the possibility of being "ganked" while leveling or doing World Quests exists.

Below, we will rank the PvP talents best used for leveling and doing solo or small group PvE content.

  1. Death Chain Icon Death Chain is a nice damage increase when pulling 3 or more enemies, though the 30-second cooldown prevents it from being used on every pull.
  2. Necrotic Aura Icon Necrotic Aura and Murderous Intent Icon Murderous Intent can be very strong when completing open-world content in a group but have very limited value in solo play.

Dark Simulacrum Icon Dark Simulacrum, Decomposing Aura Icon Decomposing Aura, Strangulate Icon Strangulate, and Walking Dead Icon Walking Dead all have limited value in PvE content.

Last Dance Icon Last Dance drastically reduces the duration and cooldown of Dancing Rune Weapon Icon Dancing Rune Weapon. When playing San'layn in open world content, it can help with maintaining Essence of the Blood Queen Icon Essence of the Blood Queen, but we generally recommend avoiding this talent.
